The father of O'Grady was Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. Her family was from Wheaton, Illinois, and was a graduate of Wheaton North High school in 1981. Before shifting into Los Angeles, she appeared in commercials for a number of companies. The first time she worked, O'Grady was a Montgomery Ward model, where she was also featured in several commercials. She played a role in the romantic comedy film, She's Having a Baby. She then played a recurring part in the ABC drama China Beach with Dana Delany. She also appeared as a guest in a variety of shows. The actress appeared in independently produced and made-for-TV films. Donna Abandando played her first lead role in ABC's NYPD Blue which is a police drama. O'Grady was the large-haired secretariat between 1993 and 1996, was awarded Emmy Award nominees each year for Outstanding Drama Series Supporting actor. With her fellow cast members, she was awarded an award, the Screen Actors Guild Award, for Outstanding Performance of the Ensemble of a Drama Series.
